Temporary Residency (Residente Temporal)
Renewable 1-4 year residency for those meeting financial requirements, with pathway to permanent status
Overview
Temporary Residency is Mexico's primary long-term visa for expats who don't yet qualify for (or don't want) permanent status. It requires proving financial solvency through either monthly income or savings. The visa is obtained at a Mexican consulate abroad, then exchanged for a resident card at INM within Mexico. Maximum total duration is 4 consecutive years, after which holders can convert to Permanent Residency without re-proving finances. Remote work for foreign employers is generally tolerated; working for Mexican employers requires a separate work permit.

- Get bank statements on official letterhead with stamp
- Apply in December to beat January fee increases
- Consider immigration facilitator for canje process (~$250-500 USD)
- Keep copies of everything—INM may lose documents
- CURP (ID number) prints automatically on new cards
Common Mistakes
- Bank statements without official bank stamps/letterhead
- Deposits that look like loans rather than income
- Waiting too long after approval to enter Mexico (180-day limit)
- Missing the 30-day window to start INM canje process
- Using e-gates at airport (need manual stamp marked CANJE)
- Leaving Mexico during canje process without permission
