Overview

Cobá offers the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula at 42 meters (Nohoch Mul), with the unique experience of exploring the sprawling 6,500+ structure complex by bicycle. Unlike the more manicured Chichén Itzá or Tulum, Cobá retains a sense of discovery with structures emerging from dense jungle vegetation. **CRITICAL UPDATE:** Climbing the Nohoch Mul pyramid is NO LONGER PERMITTED—it closed during COVID and has not reopened despite many outdated sources claiming otherwise. Even without climbing, the site's scale and jungle setting make it one of the Yucatan's most atmospheric archaeological experiences. **Getting there from Tulum:** Located 47 km (45 minutes) from Tulum. The colectivo costs just 50 pesos (~$3). Entrance runs 100-195 pesos ($6-11). Rent a bike at the entrance (40-50 pesos) to cover the extensive site efficiently—the sprawling layout makes walking impractical in the heat. **Why Cobá over other ruins:** While Chichén Itzá draws enormous tour bus crowds and Tulum's compact ruins feel overrun by noon, Cobá rewards early arrivals with jungle solitude and genuine exploration. The ancient sacbé (white Maya roads) wind through dense vegetation to scattered pyramid groups, creating moments of discovery.
