Tepoztlán
Mystical Pueblo Mágico with Aztec pyramid hike and weekend artisan markets
Overview
Tepoztlán offers mystical vibes, excellent weekend markets, and a challenging but rewarding hike to El Tepozteco—an Aztec pyramid perched on dramatic cliffs with stunning valley views. Located 76km (1.5-2 hours) from Mexico City in the state of Morelos, this Pueblo Mágico is known for its spiritual energy, alternative healing scene, and New Age atmosphere. The town sits in a valley surrounded by dramatic rock formations, creating an otherworldly landscape. The main attraction is the hike: a 2km trail (about 45 minutes up) that climbs steeply through forest to reach the pyramid and its sweeping panoramic views. The weekend tianguis (market) fills the town streets with artisan crafts, organic products, and incredible food. Tepoztlán is also famous for its homemade ice cream (nieve) and tepache (fermented pineapple drink).
