Celestún Biosphere Reserve
Thousands of pink flamingos in protected Gulf coast estuary—peak season November-March
Overview
Celestún Biosphere Reserve protects one of the largest flamingo populations in the Western Hemisphere. Located 95 km west of Mérida (2-2.5 hours by bus), the reserve's estuary provides feeding grounds for thousands of American flamingos, with peak concentrations from November through March—especially December through February when nesting occurs. Boat tours navigate through mangrove channels to reach the flamingo feeding areas, with opportunities to swim in a freshwater ojo de agua (spring) along the way. The town of Celestún itself offers a quieter alternative to Progreso for beach-seekers, with seafood restaurants lining the malecón.
