Overview

Kawah Ijen features one of the world's most surreal natural phenomena: blue flames emerging from sulfuric vents, visible only at night. The challenging night trek (starting 1-2 AM) reveals the electric blue fire before sunrise illuminates the world's largest acidic crater lake—a stunning turquoise color. Sulfur miners still work here carrying 80kg loads up the crater walls.
