Overview
Mazunte and neighboring Zipolite offer Oaxaca coast's most bohemian beach experiences. Mazunte hosts the Mexican Sea Turtle Center, draws yoga enthusiasts, and features the stunning Punta Cometa sunset viewpoint (the southernmost point in Oaxaca). Zipolite is Mexico's only legal nude beach with a laid-back hippie atmosphere and is particularly LGBTQ+-friendly. Swimming is dangerous at most beaches due to strong currents—heed local warnings. Plan 2-3 nights minimum to soak in the vibe. With the new highway to Puerto Escondido (opened February 2024), Oaxaca to Mazunte is now 3.5-4 hours.
