Overview

Monte Albán was the ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization, occupied for over 1,500 years (500 BCE to 850 CE). This UNESCO World Heritage site sits atop a mountain at 1,940 meters (6,400 feet) with 360-degree views of the Valley of Oaxaca. The site features a massive 300-meter ceremonial plaza, pyramids, royal tombs, and an excellent on-site museum housing the Treasure of Tomb 7—the greatest treasure found in Mesoamerica. At its peak, Monte Albán was home to 35,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in Mesoamerica.
