Mitla
Unique geometric mosaic stone friezes found nowhere else in Mesoamerica
Overview
Mitla is famous for its extraordinary geometric mosaic stone friezes—intricate patterns created from individually cut stones fitted together without mortar, found nowhere else in the ancient world. The site was the spiritual center of Zapotec religion, the "Place of the Dead" where high priests communed with the underworld. Unlike Monte Albán's monumental scale, Mitla showcases the finest stonework of any Mesoamerican site. The Hall of Columns features 100,000+ individually carved stone pieces forming 14 different geometric patterns. Easily combined with El Tule, Hierve el Agua, or mezcal tasting for a full valley exploration.
